ABOUT OUR CULTURE AND HISTORY
Nestled in the heart of Chapada Diamantina, the town of Andaraí is a living museum of Brazil’s colonial past and cultural richness. Founded in 1845 during the diamond rush, Andaraí quickly became a hub for garimpeiros (miners) and adventurers seeking fortune in the rugged beauty of Bahia’s interior.
The name “Andaraí” comes from the Cariri language, meaning “River of Bats,” a tribute to the region’s Indigenous roots and natural mystique. Before colonization, the area was inhabited by Cariri and Maracá tribes, and traces of their presence remain in rock paintings and oral traditions.
As the diamond trade flourished, Andaraí grew into a vibrant town with colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and a strong sense of identity. Today, it stands as one of the main gateways to the Chapada Diamantina National Park, offering access to breathtaking trails, waterfalls, and caves.
But Andaraí’s soul is found in its cultural traditions. The annual Festa do Divino Espírito Santo is a dazzling celebration of faith, music, and community, blending Afro-Brazilian, Indigenous, and Catholic influences in a week-long festival of color and devotion.
From its quilombo heritage in places like Fazenda Velha to its role in the tropeiro routes that connected Bahia’s interior, Andaraí is more than a destination — it’s a story waiting to be lived.

Every year in early June, the quiet streets of Andaraí burst into life with music, color, and devotion during the Festa do Divino Espírito Santo — one of the most cherished cultural events in Chapada Diamantina.
Rooted in centuries-old traditions, this vibrant festival blends Catholic faith with Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous influences. Locals dress in traditional costumes, join processions, and perform dances like the Marujada and Jarê, honoring the Holy Spirit with rhythm and reverence.
The celebration begins with the Rabeia, a lively parade that marks the start of the festivities. Throughout the week, the town hosts religious ceremonies, cultural performances, and communal meals that bring together generations of families and visitors.
More than a religious event, the Festa do Divino is a living expression of Andaraí’s soul — a time when history, spirituality, and community come together in joyful harmony
